Repair costs, Hurp da durp

Repair costs are an extreme gold sink out in the big scary world of FFO. If you run around wearing the paper bag low tier armor and butter knife low tier weapons, you die, simple as that, and even in sets of mid tier gear (fur/highwayman, blood/elven, bronze/iron, wizard/sorceror) you can quickly wrack up repair costs of 4k-8k, not even including weapons which are a whole different level of evil, with most of your equipment not even being beyond green. 4,000 gold may not sound like a ton, but unless you spend all your time raiding chests its too overwhelming of a cost to really do anything else with your money besides throw it at your equipment to keep it from degrading cosntantly.

All that being said it would be lovely If repair costs were axed across the board by a full 75%. Might sound like an extreme cut but you'd still be putting a good 2k to 3k in your mid tier set repairs, which is a much less demanding number but one that still merits consideration.

As a user of high tier mage gear and a power staff I approve this message.

Down with 10k repair costs!

I could honestly see this helping the majority of players. But LP said it 75% might be a little steep. If we can't do 75%, I'd say 85% of what they were originally.

Perhaps higher tier stuff should stay the same or a tiny bit better, and have mid to low tier be reduced. Having 6k repairs with a simple bronze set every time you go for a quick training run is quite a bit.

I was talking about a 75% reduction, aka 25% of what they are now... It's not nearly as crazy as it sounds, start paying attention to your repair costs and do the math.

God help you if it actually downgrades. It gets out of hand very quickly, we shouldn't be punished for having high-tier equipment.

i don't really see a problem with it and i've got my fair share of decent gear. i've never had an issue with full repairing and keeping stocked up at all this hosting.

it's loads better than back in 3.5 when costs were outrageous. i remember testing a non elemental stiletto on mal's server that was racking up 500g repairs per hit

High repair costs are a price to pay for having the best **** in the game. Newer players using not so strong items don't feel the burn as much.

There shouldn't be a punishment for having good gear.

Also, re-read LP's post about low tier gear and surviving.

I read LP's post thoroughly.
Like it or not, equipment in the game in linear as hell.
"Paper bag" type gear, which is cheap to repair, upgrade and engrave, works fine for Newbie Island.

I remember Gaku arguing about this same thing regarding staves. You use a stronger staff, you pay the price. If you can't afford it, let it degrade until you can or get something cheaper.

I do however think the costs are kind of backwards. Heavy armor is the cheapest when it provides the best defense.

Heavy armor should probably be the most expensive, followed by stealth and then light or mage.

Maybe make it scale less so high tier gear doesn't jump super high...

If costs to repair your gear are exceeding income, and such income cannot be acquired without higher tiered gear, than adjustments need to be made to level that out. You should be using gear appropriate to survive where ever you are, and you should come out with some profit after repairs.

I don't know the situation, but I think that should sound about right to everyone.

Could increase the durability of higher-tier items at least.

Do more quests. That's probably how you got most of that high level gear anyway.

Also, 4k isn't that bad, whenever my costs get that high I'm typically getting at least 10k from a training run.

Also:

I agree with this. In 3.5 it was way worse and we could still deal with it. In addition, I'm pretty sure this came up before, and Gaku's position was that you shouldn't use your high-level gear all the time, but only when you really need it, or something like that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Also I've never been one to stock up on gold, or worry about bank accounts. I always come back to town, sell, stock up, and repair, and I still make more than my repair costs. So if my repair cost is 4k, I'm usually making 10k at least total.

so you're saying that between repairs and restocking you're using up 40 to 50 percent of the gold you make in a run?

Nope you guys are right thats totally not a gold sink :D.

How foolish of me!!!

Not everyone makes alts just for questing, like myself. Every alt I've ever made is to actually play seriously, besides my 2 mules.

I don't see why making trash quest alts is your idea of a solution. Isn't trash alts for quests supposed to be frowned on? Hence the 25 garland cap.

maybe

make suffixes and prefixes have a cap on how much cost it adds to the weapon or piece of armor

then no more having of ease nearly double the price of high-tier stuff

Alright, you have a point there, but there was also a lot more to my post.
