Renaming guidelines, A little sucky in some areas dawg

So anyone who was on the other night saw the huge shitstorm over Soren's name. Soren being a character from Fire Emblem 9, and also the name this particular guy has been using for, well, ever since the game came out, a good 3 years now. He made the comment on nsay "What element should I get? Air or water? Well, Soren is a wind mage, so I guess air it is." Nabutso immediately fired up his rename stick upon seeing this message.

Here's what's interesting about all of it, initially he said "no video game references" was the guideline. It then became "no obvious video game references". After I pointed out that our lovely guide Verdelet happens to be a prominent character in the game Drakengard, and that Melody has also been used in a million and a half prominent RPGs, star ocean chiefly, it became "well, the name can't be an intentional reference to a game when you make the character so Deylin and I are ok."

Now at this point my argument became "do we really want to trust the judgment of guides on such a topic?" Raising this argument, quite respectfully I might add, was met with "hey you're not allowed to disagree with guides (bullshit, since when?)" and a 30 minute mute to me. So here I sit making this topic in the hopes that he forum moderators will be more responsible with their powers than nab was that day. I mean sure, no one wants to see idiots making characters named King Koopa or Princess Peach or Cloud or Sephiroth or Master Chief or Cortana, but those are all super obvious references that everyone and their brother has known of for years. When it's a less obvious reference, such as soren, who only two people in nsay (myself and verdelet aka deylin) knew about before he said anything, or perhaps a name like Legna (how many people here played drakengard, honestly?), why should anyone be given guff?

The name guideline was fine when it applied to real people, taxing video game character names seems a little much, and if a good 70% of the playerbase were honest about their naming inspiration, the renamers would have a lot of work on their hands. Isn't there some way we can change the guidelines so that while prohibiting Master Chief and Sephiroth levels of stupidity, we allow people to pay homage to things and characters that they enjoy?

My Black Wizard's name is one letter from Falco, a popular Star Fox character. His name is Fylco. I demand justice upon myself!!

That being said. Nabshitho is stupid, and abused his renamer JUST LAST WEEK, and already he's making calls like this that are so stupid. God what a faggot.

In this case, I'd say that with the name not being an obvious reference, it would be allowed to fly. Easily recognizable names by many people, as you said, those are perfectly fine to inform them that they need a rename. However, when it's extremely obscure (For instance, when Nab tried to force ME to get a rename because apparently "Kamog" was a moogle in FF6's jap version), it's a sign that we may need less zealous renamers.

Zealousness when it comes to upholding rules, that's fine, but there has to be a line drawn, and when you do it solely to piss others off by being a complete rules lawyer about things nobody complains/cares about, you need to step down and just play the fucking game.

BUT ITS OK BECAUSE YOU DIDNT MEAN KUMOG THAT WAY

ITS OK FOR BARAM TOO HE DIDNT MEAN BARAM THAT WAY

VERDELET IS OK SHE DIDNT MEAN IT THAT WAY

MELODY IS OKAY ITS BASED ON A FRIEND ETC.

...

Nab, dawg, can you not see that when you need to find a thousand loopholes through your own proclamation, it's a proclamation not worth making?

Magnus Gallant - Main Character in Ogre Battle 64
Locke - FF6. But he's got a cool last name so that's aight.
Verdelet - Drakengard (also see FFXI)
Melody - lol
Batt Osi - obviously derived from Battousi
Fylco - derived from Falco
Lithiozp - canadian

the list goes on and on

double standards, backwards rules, etc

What we need are the renamers NOT be be nazis. God Christ Almighty, none of you are creative with names so don't judge people for not being creative themselves.

So you heard of a name that was in a game released in Japan that sold 4 copies. And the person admitted that's where they got it. Big. Fucking. Deal.

Until the above list (and MORE people) get a name change I think you guys should ease up a little bit and not go flaunting your powers because you can.

Or am I the only one who believes in letting newbies have fun and only step in if they are ruining it for OTHER newbies? ;)

Or you could just make people choose real names. FFO doesn't look like it's in the setting of Feudal Japan or Neo-Tokyo so japu fapu names should be out.

What's wrong with names like John, Michael, Clifford, Gabriel, Gabrielle, Camille, etc. etc. normal fucking names.

There's such an abundance of normal every day names and even names that aren't so common that you shouldn't need to rip vid char names/anime names.

Use:
www.babynames.com
www.babyhold.com
www.thinkbabynames.com
and a whole slew of other name sites that pop up if you search baby names on google.

Hell, most of these sites even give meanings for the names so you can actually make your name unique to what you want your character to be.

I think all FFOers should be required to use black names from now on.

I promise this idea will have Dean's full support.

Being that I am suggesting it I call dibs on Raekwon.

Dominic Newbie Says: Anyone wanna team up for Mt. Poison?
Dominiq Newbie Says: Nah, Garland's better.
Dominik Newbie Says: You need to be like, level 25 for Garland.

Sorry, had to do it. Just as Cea said, Magnus is from Ogre Battle, a reference a lot of people missed. Also, Locke, no FF fan would miss that, and I saw someone named after a character from a series of books before. My own redmage is named Odessa Silverberg (But I only use the surname), I got Toxa from Kartia, and so on.

I'm not one for double standards, but a name that references something isn't a big deal.

my name is apparently some one-off character from ff6 in shadow's dream sequence in the world of ruin which i didn't even know until like 2 years after i started using it.

i joined byond and my original key was lord baramos bc i was 12 and stupid and started off in dwo and thought baramos was super cool. eventually the players there all just started calling me baram for shorthand and thus this name was born.

Nothing like a good shitstorm to start my day...

The naming guidelines are fine, its just that my Renamers suck. Unfortunately, theres no one better willing to do their jobs, and they do do it right most of the time.

Here's why the rule is okay. First of all, it says guideline for a reason, second, it specifically states famous names. The guidelines are meant to stop Mario, Sephiroth, Cloud etc, and the no screenname look-a-like part is meant to stop names like "XXDoomxxx" or anything with numbers or something in it. I and Gaku and I'm pretty sure anyone with half a brain doesn't care about nicknames or codenames or whatever.

That said, you guys are also stupid for complaining about little things like this. So a Renamer thought Soren needed to be changed? Ok, so the guy's name gets changed and then we continue on with life. Not the end of the world. The rule isn't exact for a reason. Renamers are humans too, so everyone's interpretation will be different.

If you'd like, we can go with Dean's idea and force every single player to use a real life first name, or we can go back to when we had a list of 20 specific rules that made things more confusing than they are now.

Or you can stop complaining and get on with your life, because the name rules work.

This is a fantasy game Dean. Fantasy game.

So in all honesty I think your "real names" are less fitting than your "japu fapu" or whatever you called them names.

But we could totally go with that.

I'm sure people would be attracted to a game where you're forced to have a non-unique standardized name from some crappy baby naming website. :)

is the "google rule" still in effect that garral used to use or what? if you don't know it's the one where if you search the name and it comes up in the first couple results you can't use it. seems kind of excessive because you can find pretty much any character from a game that way, whether it was a famous game or not

It was a good guideline at the time but I don't really care about it anymore.

I also will put in for a renamer position. I was thinking about asking to be reinstated as a guide anyway, and really, a certain few people are way too fucking rod up ass about things. What's your policy/procedure/whatever to apply as a renamer Locke? I have plenty of guiding experience, but if you want me to start as one for awhile or w/e, that's fine.

You have to be active and have integrity. I know you have integrity but you don't even play that much to my knowledge, and activity is the problem. The main argument that keeps the current Renamers as Renamers is that they're far more active and persistent than anyone else.

Yeah dawg, I'm active again, which is why I'm asking. Quite a few players can attest to that.
