A discussion of policy, Names and Icons oh joy!

So apparently Locke and whoever were working on some set in stone guidelines rules for in game icons. If we want to go removing people's icons it seems natural that such rules would be in place to fall back on. I'm going to not work on a list, but instead propose a short and clean list of rules bearing in mind gaku's wishes for his game and my own recollection of past rules.

1) Existing icons cannot be pulled directly from any game franchise, be it final fantasy, fire emblem, sonic the hedgehog, whatever. You can't be Mog and you can't be Marth. No Link, no Cloud, no Sagner Zogvolt or whatever the hell his name is, Kumog would know. This one is pretty self explanatory.

2) Simpling taking an icon and recoloring it does not make it acceptable.

3) It is permissible to use characters from other games as bases, but they must be heavily infused with the artists' own original work. You can't throw a set of sunglasses on an FF1 White Wizard and call it a custom icon. Give him a new hairstyle, a different set of clothing, and a manly flowing beard however, you're good to go. The old ruling was that the icon had to have at least 50% of it's original spriting modified, this seems a fair and time tested guideline that we never should have stepped away from.

4) Keep icons thematically appropriate. We're in a middle ages swords n sorcery setting here, no aviator sunglasses or shiny wristwatches.

5) Lose the invis states. If your icon gives you the advantage of being hard or impossible to see under certain conditions (cough cough kaiser dragon melody cough), fix it.

6) Fully original work is highly encouraged. Go get Galano to make you something nice if you can.

Here's how such a set of guidelines would play out on, eh, Baram and I. I use us as examples because we both have at least a few customs and I'm heavily familiar with them.

Lord Phoenix would be fine, and I mean real Lord Phoenix, not Iwam putting his damn icon on my key (not that I care, mind you). Yes, he's based on Galuf. However, he's based on a very specific galuf icon set (bard, in case you were wondering) which was then heavily modified, clothing style, hair and accessories, all changed drastically.

Baram is fine. He's as far as anyone can tell original work, and if he does have a base it's been so heavily altered that it may as well be called original.

Fyiu Scha, face state is unacceptable, Will need to be changed. The rest of the icon is questionable too, it's intended to be the fire emblem 7 character Athos, and while Athos has no 16 bit icons in FFO's Terulia's style in his original form, it may not be probably isn't any more appropriate than someone creating and using a 16 bit Cloud Strife icon.

Goldor, again, questionable. He's a big bad and cuddly(?) Final Fantasy II villain, but the face state and entire icon are found nowhere in the game, and are all original work as far as that is concerned. However, he may encounter the same dilemma as our cloud strife and athos hopefuls.

Thoughts comments and suggestions are desired, keep discussion on topic and mature please, name calling will result in me pleading for vicious and willful acts of excess moderation.

I dont really know about icons, whether ripped form a game or doesnt "fit" the game. I dont really see anything wrong with icons unless its a big piece of **** with shoes icon. But with names, i dont think things like screennames or things like mule, mule 2, secret alt, things like that should not be allowed

Despite popular belief I believe Anarchy should not mean total Anarchy and some rules need to be enforced. Such as names and icons. Will post more later!

How silly of me to mention names and totally forget to enter my suggestions for name guidelines. Here they are.

1) No profanity, direct or indirect. Naming a character Fahk Yhew or Suhk Maih Cawhk Fah Ghet is no more appropriate than naming them **** You or Suck My Cock or ******, alright?

2) No religious or political references in names. This would apply to places of interest in political or religious history. Sorry George Bush, *****, Ghandi, **** Cheney, Guantanamo, Geneva, Nagasaki, Mecca, your kind are not welcome here.

3) For that matter, don't name characters after real world cities or people for god's sake. I don't want to see Brad Pitt on my TV and I sure as hell don't want to see him on my Terulia.

4) Silly names are fine but no direct insults are permissable. Euh Maad, Trowlma Naim, Ahb Nachsius, come on in, the water's fine. Ewndis Ghay, Kew Mhog Suhks, please leave the building.

5) Just leave out the video game character names. If it's a character name and we don't know it or recognize it don't tell us if you don't want it changed. I doubt Cloud Strife would get past anyone here, but unless they're a real class A nerd they might not all recognize Ghaleon at first sight, so be thankful if they don't.

About as cut and dry as it gets, discuss suggest criticise but again be mature dammit.

Naming guidelines are more trouble than they are worth im my opinion. Just leave it up to the filters that Gaku has already put in place.

I don't think it matters what the icons are (as *** as that may be) as long as they don't have a negative or positive impact on gameplay, like invisible states etc.

It's a real pain in the ass coming up with guidelines everyone agrees on, then enforcing them (especially with people like oondi in charge, since like stat said, emotions, personal vendetta's, and things such as that come into play).

For names, you can't use numbers as is. You could be Fefifofu or Chair and it wouldn't change how the game is played. The only two things I can think of that shouldn't be allowed for names are masked vulgarity (Penls), and impersonation Cloud=/=CIoud.

Edit: the more rule enforcing you guys demand, the more bull**** you will have to deal with (locke, dream, oondi, kaji).

I'm with Dean in relying more on rules set by the game than having to let real people decide what's right. It's easy to say "make me admin again I'll do it right", but it's not guaranteed I'd always be around, and if the next person who comes along does things wrong or is just plain horrible, you're stuck with a period of awful times. Sounds familiar, so I think everyone can see the point.

The icon rules seem fine to me on every point.

You can't rely 100% on rules set by the game since people can bypass any rule once they know what it is.

See: rules-lawyers

e.g. "You cannot have a name that consists of all capital letters."
result: "HGFSDSa joins the world!"

Just put one rule. Don't be stupid. Name changers have the right to change your name at their own discretion if they feel it doesn't fit within Gaku's standards. If someone makes a character and they think to themselves, "Well, what would Gaku think about this name.." or "Does this name fit in with this type of game/timeline?" and the answer is no, you're getting a name change. If anything, we should have much less rules and more discretionary action (in an ideal world), with people that aren't going to put their own feelings into the equation. Unfortunately I don't think many people are up to the task of holding that sort of responsibility maturely. But who knows.

I think renamers are good, but i still think rules should be more lax.

Annoying as it may be, is it really impeding anyone's gameplay?

I really don't believe it is. It would be easier to just let people have their lame ass names, and the people with half a brain in their head can continue to choose unique names.

I guess you make a good point, but that name just intices me to pk it every time I see him, and if he is a new player that ends in him leaving a thread like lettos.

I agree with Stat. Idiots like that just ruin the game for me.

Hell, I've had a problem with Oondi's name for the longest time for the same reason. A bunch of us came out with acceptable names, the fact that others aren't is either because.

A: They want to get a crude laugh.

B: They don't care.

C: They simply have no imagination.

This is what I was going to say. Good job Lumino haha

Gaku made up his name by throwing together as many letters as he can to become more powerful. Everyone knows he gets his power from how long and silly his name is.

Actually, I was referring to Stat's comment since Grameramera came into existence when I spam-killed someone with a DBZ name.

Is that in agreement that guidelines are useful? Yea obviously its going to cause some problems, but Id rather have someone mad that their name wasnt allowed, then SJIF89KJ_Killa running around.
