Yea, fun times before I got pressure from everyone wanting their icons in, even if they were outside the standards ("oh my god but it's only a little inappropriate farkonz." "your to hard on me fartonz can you please fix it?"), and then college. Bleh.

I did my best to stay neutral for icon checking, but when you play the game...

reply to Nabutts O:

Would be cool if you could explain what icons are acceptable, and why.

You're aware that you have michelle in both the acceptable and unacceptable icon columns right?

Also, So what the **** is this, its up to your own personal taste now which icons get accept and which ones don't? Seems like a whole lot of Bias to me.

It's not just the icon, its the exact state. If, for example, Iwamori's icon wasn't smoking there in that state, his icon would be fine, and Michelle's icon is fine in the south state but has major quality issues in the east and west states.

The point is that there was so many icons that made me think i was on Icon Ultima instead of a FINAL FANTASY game. Your icon needs to fit the theme, fit your class, and be not downright TERRIBLE to be accepted now. Isn't that fair?

FFO's style is an opinion now? No. The current icons and current tilesets are a style. FF1-FF3.

Customs once had to fit the style of the game, but that died out when certain icon checkers cranked out icons for gold and people wanted their little piece of space robots or flying zombies to be put into the game. Face the facts, its not like that anymore and you need to have a good icon for it to be accepted.

Don't be coy. Judging whether or not the icons fit the style is a matter of opinion which is obviously what he was pointing out.

Sorry I was gone all day enjoying some time with my girlfriend.

Icons and lag:

When a player logs onto FFO, they download the basic resources. This does not include:

An icon recolored at creation
An icon recolored through an icon checker's upload (as a custom icon)
A fully custom icon through an icon checker.

Icons which are similar sizes to the base icons take almost no time to download when the player first encounters them. This includes the aforementioned 3 icons.

If you all seriously think custom icons will cause more lag than even a base recolor then you need to learn how the internet works. And how data works. And what a kilobyte is.

Im just going on what has been happening. Every time someone gets poisoned, or every time someone dies, or has a victory state animation go off, or casts a spell, the game will freeze and like like a *****.

Except there are commonly custom icons created that are 10-20 times larger than the base recolors. In fact, my current Master's base recolor has an extra color not in the base icon and it's still just barely over 2.21kb in size. However, as I understand it, when the icon is uploaded in the game the game converts it to the three icons you receive when you Get PC Icon.

There are many icons, on the other hand, that in Terulia format have a tendency to be 50+kb before being uploaded, not all of that necessarily coming from the face icon. Not to mention that it gets split up into different (larger) files after being uploaded.

Finally, the issue isn't just the icons themselves but also when they get Poisoned, a BYOND mechanism is used to generate the color-change which has a tendency to take that "usually 50kb icon" and turn it into "500kb icon". When 10+ people have to download this icon at the same time, the server seems to take precedence on uploading these states to each individual person, and here's where things get even worse because of the way BYOND handles its net: the downloading is practically based on the person with the slowest latency/ping.

Most of that is speculation of what I've observed based on reading update logs of BYOND as well as my own toying with DM coding, but I claim that it is an accurate portrayal of how things work.

The reason base recolors work so well is that it forces the icon to stick with very few colors, where as other people will use three-four different colors just for hair. I won't object on how good it looks to have hair shading, but when the BYOND engine has to recolor that many additional pixels, it is that much harder to redownload the icon when someone gets Poisoned, Berserked, Ice-Bolted, Regenned, Refreshed, and surely more that I can't recall right now.
