It'd be nice to have something a bit more noticeable than a new message count inside of parentheses. Maybe something like this:
or even just making the message count flash if it's greater than 0.

Something like this!

I like the flashing red text. Be really nice. I've missed the notifications a few times because I browsed over the simple text.
