These are both very cool. I didn't expect such things to be included in a byond game.

A few already have em, get around more.

It's a good addition though, finally all those damned pots laying around have a purpose.

I'd just like to say I hope fear is reworked, and to think about changing the initiate name from Mawkus to someone a little more legenedary, since we have TAE as the pupil trainer. I suggest Ihm be the name for the initiate trainer ;)

Personally I'd suggest LESS circlejerk-y names for ingame NPCs, so that we can possibly lower future drama retardation that can and will spring about from players when their name/likeness is used ingame, before they inevitably ragequit (This IS FFO's community, after all, people rage DAILY, even over minor things like harmless jokes) and demand their name/old icon removed. Less drama in the long run for the entire playerbase to deal with is worth less circlejerking to please a few old players.

Less naming-npcs-after-any-players. More using names that aren't just tributes to people who may be/are long gone, and thus alienating new players when they hear how the old players were so much better than the new, how the new will never be as good as them, how the old players were SO AWESOME they got immortalized in the game...

When you get told these kind of things when you come into a game that the people before you were so good that they essentially get 'rewarded' by permanently being a prominent NPC of any sort, it's telling the new folks they won't be as awesome as that guy was.

It's impossible to continue the history of the three kingdoms without references to players who were around at the time. Plus, it's more interesting to use 'actual' characters in the plot than to make up generic placeholders. Take Tae for example... Although he died (IC) during the FFO timeline, he was still alive during the Terulia era. He was thus given a minor role in the game. Anyone who's never heard of Tae won't think twice about it. Anyone who has will enjoy the reference to "Disco Tae". win. win.

True, minor roles are fine to give, just avoid having them put in silly quips that would be giant in-jokes to players who've played a while (for instance, no jokes about the Shrouded Mauler if PcP was an NPC.)

The new book drop system would honestly be a more amusing way to give such quips than 'oh hey, an NPC everyone can find, but not understand the references.' since you can expect a book to be decently fleshed out instead of a single remark about some event only oldbies can remember.

Evey good game has a back story that is just as entertaining and enjoyable as the game itself. With FFO we have endured endless amounts of drama, wars, hate, and (***) love. 5+ years and still going strong FFO has so many stories than need/should be told for people who are new to the game and for people to have an understanding of how the game world is at the time. Sure everything changes,just like in the real world, but it is nice to know the past at times. Even though most people don't like to roleplay, we are playing a game that we play as different characters so to improve the roleplaying experience which in turn enhances the gameplay and overall enjoyment of the game for people who are into these types of things, this is a great idea.

The reason I liked FFO was because of it's small community. One person can/would be able to create change either positive or negative. This is a testament to the culture of FFO. Why not pay a little tribute to the players who helped shape the world. It's only words after all.

I disagree, that's a pretty pessimistic view.

At some point this awesome, immortalized guy was a newbie to the game, just as unknown and insignificant as the newbies your referring to will be. If anything, it would be motivation. I'd think. They'll see this guy, who at some point was just as wet behind the ears, played the game and contributed, and thrived enough that he'll always be a part of the games history.

It's not a way of sneering at new people and telling them that they'll never be awesome. It's just a way of showing them what they can accomplish.

Players, whether NPCS or actually oldbies playing the game, will always talk about the old days or cool **** that happened in the past. I personally love to hear stories like that. About wars or when something was first discovered. Why not let people enjoy it as part of the story they've just become a part of?

I actually think it's really really cool how gaku's taken old player-made stories formed from people who PLAYED his little old final-fantasy-1-online byond game but that had nothing to do at all with the actual game's story up to that point, and made them into the actual, canon storyline of the game. It was one thing when the citizens of domains in Vorgardia and Irendi would talk about things that tied into these old player-made stories and kingdom backstories, but you always felt like a lot of what they talked about probably wouldn't be in the game anytime soon, and if anything it was little more than flavor text. However, in Terulia, it starts from the very beginning, and since it's not FF-based at all anymore there's no reason to waste any time scooting around talking about Garland and things like that. The whole story from the get-go IS this stuff people have been making up and building upon for years and it's all about the players.

Also, Kumog, there's been a statue of Elias--yes, me--in Final Fantasy Legacy in Cid's house for many years now because I mapped a large chunk of the game just "for charity" even though I wasn't part of the dev team or anything like that. No one gives a crap, and no one respects me there, the newbies don't care and the oldbies just rag on me. Which is how it should be, and I'm sure it wouldn't be that different if people meet the actual people these NPCs and such are named after in FFO.

You guys are missing Kumog's main point.

Less naming-npcs-after-any-players.


He's saying make sure a bunch of people aren't immortalized just because they know the guy that happens to be in charge at the moment. Players that have actually contributed a lot and molded the game vastly will be easily accepted, something like "Mawkus" wouldn't be, given how much grief and trouble he gives only to come off as someone with great meaning.

I'm not going to say more cause I have an entire list of people before even I first started playing I could whip out here that will probably never be recognized, but I still would like people to not misread Kumog's post and think he's bitter or what-have-you.

It's just like I keep saying over and over again; you might as well just remove all character progression as a whole and just make a game similar to Proelium. I think that would be pretty fun.

EDIT: Also, why in the world do we get outlawed randomly?

I wouldn't know for sure, but my best guess is that since Fog can be easily and most beneficially applied to anyone and doesn't have any situations where it can't be used to make things better (even magic-users hit sometimes), it was taken out. Lamp can give unwanted attention, Temper falls short on weak characters, Fast can drain stamina quickly, Ruse isn't as effective without attention given to one's own agility, and Disencumber/Refresh/Regen need the right conditions to function properly.

The main reason I think this is because Gakumerasara changed Imbue Element spells from an attack boost plus element change simply cast on the player to an element change that only affects one weapon per cast, and the weapon has to be put on the ground. In the past, Imbue spells were used almost all the time cause even if a monster resists an element, you'd still have that attack bonus. Plus you can have two different ones to help avoid using a bad match-up.

This is all just speculation though. I don't like the idea of removing content completely, maybe Fog could be changed into a user-only spell like Saber, so it can stay in the game but have a restriction like everything else (the restriction being you have to be whatever job learns it if you ever want to apply it to yourself).

My big complaint right now, is that during testing, pupils and initiates (each using a different weapon, most I didn't know naturally. I know it happened with a bo staff/polearm type, a sword, and an axe) were nearly one shotting me. I was trying a novice class and at level 1 (we all were since apparently the level system was broken) my max health was 143.

During the silly little fights we were having I was hit for 110 by a pupil, 75 by an initiate then got critted for 200. Which is just absurd considering I was doing steady damage of 20-27. Add to that the fact that proffing your spells/skills/equipment stats is tons harder now as I can't spend my experience to move me closer to the next prof it was pretty unbalanced. And in fact, once I fizzled a kill shot on a Black which let him come and plaster me for roughly half my max health.

From what I can tell so far, if we're all level 1 the only 1 on 1 fights I'll be able to win is if it's a melee that's away, or a novice that I get the first cast on and never fizzle.
