Terulia as an isometric game?
example of an isometric BYOND game using BYOND's new isometric tile support: (link) thoughts? _________________________________________ ScouSin: Damn you Gaku! Damn you and your; "Be patient, and if you don't want to, tough, because I'm going to be all mystical about it!"

My thoughts are twofold-
It's gonna be a massive transition in mapping, graphics, and coding. Guess who will be giving himself and his devs loads of new work and practically erasing all that's already been done. The fast paced action oriented style of play involved in both FFO and Terulia would be incredibly difficult to translate to an isometric perspective. I don't believe I've ever seen an isometric action game that runs fluidly, the movement is just too damned awkward (haha sonic 3D blast). It'd take extreme amounts of time, work, and testing to transition it yet again and to make it work well, if it can be made to work well after all. Up to you in the end but all the extra work it will involve should certainly be a factor to consider. _________________________________________ Keepin on peepin!

They're having built-in support for isometric now? Can you link me to a post or something about this? I'm interested in it..

I was just doing it to see what walls would look like in different positions D=

The 3Dness is ruined. _________________________________________ A good player knows how to play his class. An elitist knows how to play everyone else's class.

dems the limitations of isometricness..
it would look better if i had more detailed graphics though. _________________________________________ |

How much longer are you going to realistically work on Terulia in the future? I thought years ago the game was going to start, then a year after that it was going to, then so on. I keep half-joking half-seriously saying that Terulia's never gonna be released but it seems to get post-poned way too much. Probably you're busy as always but that's sorta my point; don't know if you finished college yet but if not you're probably close and you'll have work to deal with, plus I don't know if you're gonna keep on with the Byond coding hobby. Granted you're like the best person I know at it by far (maybe there are better people like the guys who developed it from scratch but I haven't seen them make any FFO-good games) so it might not be something that's dropped so easily, but it still seems like Terulia won't ever get done.
From experience I know that when I was still a part of the development team I somehow got a lot more done with my assigned task than most of the people working on the six basic jobs for months in just one month, and I honestly was screwing around with my time until things fell into place. It only took what, years now for the six basic jobs to finally be completed? It's partially because there are always these new ideas being come up with and rearranging everything that has already been established. I don't wanna seem like a jerk here, really being sincere with you, is it okay to keep making changes to Terulia, or is it even really being worked on by anyone excluding yourself? The whole reason I played FFO again this version was because it was the "final" one and I thought it wouldn't last too long, so I wanted to make a char and just show up everyone and crash their egos so they wouldn't remember FFO like they ran the game (all hail Jiritsu etc). But it's been up way longer than I anticipated. You're done with FFO but I always thought that you could've probably perfected it a long time ago if you hadn't worked on Terulia and it'd be near-close to a finished, balanced game. By going on with Terulia I know you've done a lot of work but it hasn't shown yet. Just make sure you aren't screwing yourself in the end. One good thing about this isometric map thing though is that we could finally ban those people hiding behind the development label but that's it really. _________________________________________ |

People don't hide behind a development label. If any of them needed to be banned, I'd ban them.

I don't think it would work too well. It is something that's genuinely worth a shot if you want to do it, but overall, I'm not keen on the idea.

This seems more like something benefitial for Vengeance 56. I can't see how applicable to FFO this system would be, no matter how awesome of a thought it'd be.

FFO/Terulia's got this feel that's unique to itself. I don't think a translation to isometric is a good idea. It'd be awesome for a seperate game, but you know what they say. Don't fix what's not broken, and FFO's system is damn near perfect.

Sure isometric is said to give the muscle the most fatigue but maybe we should stick with eccentric and concentric contractions. I mean, how many people train by holding their bench press half way for 2 minutes.
No one does that. Isometric has its advantages but I think it's best to stick with Periodization Training and not focus on just isometric training (even though I do love pillars). _________________________________________ A good player knows how to play his class. My only problem with the current system is height-related.
You can stand on top of a wall and see disproportionately farther north than south. An isometric system would solve that issue, but other than that, yeah I think the current system is fine. If people like the current system, I don't want to hear any complaints about the game's graphics (which are limited by the system). I expect to continue working on Terulia for a few more years at least, and likely longer than that. I can say with certainty that I won't be moving to another game development system, so if I stop working on Terulia, it's because I've decided to quit BYOND. I've been in grad school for 3 years now, and I've probably got 3 more to go. My work/school obligations take precedence over Terulia development, which is why it's come to a screeching halt in recent weeks. I've dabbled in forum updates to get things stable, but other than that, I haven't taken the time to do anything else. While I could spend my free time working on the game, or spend time I should be working on school-related things working on it (my favorite form of procrastination), my load is stressful enough that I can't focus on programming at all right now. I don't know if you've ever put off a paper for a class until the day before it was due, just to pull an all-nighter to finish it. I thrive on that kind of pressure. When there's a deadline, I can focus and get **** done like no one else, and I do it well. What I have now is a similar situation, multiplied by 20X in importance, and no time limit. Basically I'm not getting enough done and it's destroyed my drive to do anything else (Terulia). That's probably more than you needed to know. All I can say is, once I'm done with this aspect of the project, whenever that happens to be, I imagine Terulia development will proceed rather quickly. In the mean time, you can blame any delays on me. _________________________________________ ScouSin: Damn you Gaku!
