During your stay in FFO, you will often find large brown boxes lying around, usually in the aftermath of a difficult battle. These are referred to simply as chests, and almost always contain more than one item, possibly gold as well. Left-click on any adjacent chest to collect all of the items simultaneously. If you do not wish to take all items, instead right-click on the chest: you will examine all of the chest's contents without removing anything. To remove individual items, select the icon for said item, which will take only that item from the chest. Gold can also be taken out separately by clicking on the blue hyperlink that reads how much gold is in the chest.

Items in normal chests degrade over time. Thus, it is not wise to store items out in the open, especially where they can be stolen by any passerby. However, domains have access to a special building known as the PC House, which can store items indefinitely. In such rooms, chests will not degrade, and the items are as safe as possible.

There is another type of chest that does not degrade in any condition, called a permanent chest, or permachest for short. Such chests will always exist in the same general area, and in fact generate gold and items. However, it can take a very long time for this generation to occur such that the items and/or gold are worth the trip. Initially, it takes quite a while (at least half an hour) before anything generates at all; the process is slow and it could be several hours before the value of the item has reached even 1000 gold. While all chests have a maximum value limit, it is much more likely for the value limit to be reached if you wait longer.

Checking the chest at any time will automatically reset the generation; examining will not take the item/gold but will freeze the value increase anyway, so it is best to simply take what is inside. Adding items to these chests also causes a value freeze.

(For people who like to wait on perma chests, a tip on identifying permachests would be to try and walk through the chest. If it is dense, then it is indeed a perma)
