As many of you are aware, progress on Terulia has been halted for months due to work on the new MySQL-powered forums. One of the main difficulties has been porting all of the existing forum data over to MySQL, but as you can see by visiting test.terulia.com, this problem has been addressed and solved quite nicely. (And in the event of a database failure, the existing data can be re-imported very easily.)

Since we will soon be moving over to the new forums, this post is intended to describe preparations that you will personally need to make as well as any implications for FFO/Terulia.

#1) Test the new forums. If you find any bugs, report them ASAP. Any changes made during testing will be overwritten during the final move, so feel free to go nuts with testing. If your BYOND key is different from your forum account user name on the current system, you won't have access to your current forum account during testing.

#2) If your forum user name is different from your BYOND key, please reply to this post with your BYOND key. This is important since the new forums use BYOND key authentication. If you fail to do this, you will not be able to access your account on the new forums after the move. If you wait until after the move, I can still link you to your old account, but it becomes more of a pain in the ass.

#3) Barring any major hangups, the forum move will take place on Monday, November 15th.

#4) Since the FFO/forum linkage will be rendered obsolete by the new forum system (which uses client/key authentication), the current version of FFO (February 2010) will be taken down and replaced with the latest working version for which source code is available (October 2009). This will necessitate a pwipe.

#5) The new forum linkage system and inter-game chat system (read as: worldsay) will be implemented in FFO as time permits.

#6) I will continue to focus on the linkage system as applicable to FFO/Terulia as well as other games. The goal is to have this same communication system, including its planned social network-style front-end, incorporated into as many BYOND games as possible. This will in turn increase forum traffic, ad revenue, and Terulia exposure.

#7) Finally, work will resume on Terulia.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them here, but more importantly, post your BYOND keys so linkage will work properly once the new system is in place. If your post is deleted, that means I've already read it and incorporated the linkage.

Question:
Since I'm changing my main key, I'm moving my chars with icons on that key too. If I don't have the icons changed to the new key before the wipe, do I have to get to level 20 after the wipe to get my icon back for that character, or will an admin/icon checker change it for me upon request?
Pretty much I need to know if I should make the switch before or after...

Yes, check the updates board.

Anything with an o next to it means it was for the hosted version of FFO. Basically we lost a few minor updates here and there, bug fixes, and that NPC revolt thing, so it shouldn't be a big deal.

@ Gale and anyone else I will be willing to transfer and upload icons to brand new keys. I know a few other people have already gotten admins to do this. However if you wish to keep your old names for your chars, I cant help you with that and you will need an admin. I will be free all today and tomorrow to do this. However on the last day of this server I'd like to spend my time destroying my own domains. So I might be a tad reluctant. I got permission from Darlute, and Sinsie helped transfer for Ethan making this only fair.

Everyone who's posted their BYOND key: Your user accounts should be imported to your key. Please login to the new forums at test.terulia.com to make sure the import worked properly. Again, this is just a test before the final import. IF YOU HAVE ANY ERRORS DISPLAYED ONSCREEN, LET ME KNOW. Look around the site to make sure everything's working properly. This includes User CP, Forum CP (if applicable), posts, subforums, PMs, etc.

@Ace: Suck it up. The current version is useless since it can't be modified in any way.

The two things that haven't been re-implemented yet are the Active Topics and unread topic icons. These should hopefully be finished up tomorrow.

How much is supposed to be transferred to the test forum? Things like avatars, signatures, and number of posts?
Also you see your BYOND key on the top left and when you make new posts right?

Errors are still popping up, unfortunately.
Until this problem is fixed, the forum transfer can't take place.
Few people are doing any testing aside from just logging in, which makes it very difficult to find and fix bugs.
Please try again and let me know if you run into any problems.
e.g. Someone is crashing the server using Forum CP but hasn't mentioned anything about it here.

I've recoded just about all of the FFO updates that were "lost". The exceptions are internal optimizations that won't effect the game much (e.g. map loading will take a lot longer).
There are a number of small FFO updates I'm working on; once the last of these is finished, FFO will be hosted.
maybe Thursday, more likely Friday.
This will coincide with the final forum transfer.
test.terulia.com will become www.terulia.com (with a fresh import from the old forums)

edit: There is one remaining feature to add to both FFO and Terulia before FFO can be reverted. Given that I will be leaving town tonight and will have unreliable internet access for the next 2 days, I don't know if I can have the game up tonight or tomorrow. Since I will be back on Sunday, the switch will take place Sunday night at the latest.
