I just picked up 22 computers for $240 at the recent university surplus auction.
2 are old and will likely be donated to Goodwill. 3 will be taken to work so I don't have to carry my laptop everywhere. 1 will be sent to my great-aunt. That leaves 16; of these, ~4 are only good for parts. Of the remaining 12, I will set up 2 backup servers (a networked RAID-style system), ~4 game servers, and one server for active save files. Of the potential game servers, these are all Pentium 4 Dell Optiplex computers of the same quality as the Terulia test server / web server. Now I can start experimenting with splitting the Terulia server. not bad for $240. _________________________________________ ScouSin: Damn you Gaku! when you said experimenting with splitting servers, do you mean in a way to make ffo/terulia run faster, or so that there's like multiple "worlds"?

each major area on its own server, thereby decreasing load and increasing speed over all

I just had this mental image of you running off with a hobo shopping cart with 22 busted computers in it doing the disco cecil dance.
It was pretty amazing. _________________________________________ Keepin on peepin!

At this rate, in 10 years Terulia will be an Xbox MMORPG...and cost $15 a month to play.

Ok; I've finally got everything sorted out.
Here are the stats of the remaining computers: All are Pentium 4 desktops These all have DDR RAM. Some are maxed; most are not. 1 - 3.0GHz dual core w/ 2GB RAM 2 - 2.6GHz dual core w/ 1GB RAM 3 - 2.4GHz w/ 1GB RAM 4 - 2.0GHz w/ 512MB RAM 5 - 1.8GHz w/ 1GB RAM 6 - 1.8GHz w/ 768MB RAM Assuming I can get the split server system up and running, here's how I'm thinking of splitting the load... 1: server for Terulia continent and 1 kingdom (1 processor each) 2: server for 2 kingdoms (1 processor each) 3: server for the newbie area 4: login server/hub + save file storage 5: backup server 6: web server the current FFO server: test server the current web server: dedicated firewall PC It's going to be a while before we need that many servers to run the game, but I'm planning ahead. This coming weekend, we'll run the test on PC#1 to see how it handles the game. I also have 3 left over computers, one of which I'm shipping to Garet. If you would like to buy one of the remaining 2 for ~$100 (which includes ~$40 for shipping), let me know. These computers have 1.9GHz Pentium 4 processors with 1GB PC133 RAM (which I'm having to upgrade at my own cost), CDRW drives, 40+ GB disk space (negotiable), and either Windows X.P. or Ubuntu Linux as you prefer. _________________________________________ ScouSin: Damn you Gaku! well, that's really great! ffo's always been the best BYOND game but lag's been one of the major issues dragging it down, more or less depending on the host at the time. finally "beating" the lag like this feels like a big victory
heck, I've always really adored playing the game at like 6 AM when not many people at all are on, and feeling sometimes as if I'm playing it offline by myself, it's so smooth. Having that feeling for everyone all the time would make everything so much more enjoyable. _________________________________________ |

Don't jump to conclusions Elyas Machera. Lag isn't about the computer at all. It's really about upload and download speeds. If his Internet can't handle a lot of computers accessing his web things could slow down actually.

In FFO's case, processing power seems to be the main limitation. When 30+ players are on, CPU usage hovers between 80-100%.
